Date: 23 October
Rail: True entire course
Track Condition: Good 4
Track Expectations: A fair surface is expected for Cup day at Geelong, with warm race day weather forecast.
Race 1 – Avalon Airport BM70 Handicap
Small field of stayers to kick off proceedings. Derby-bound colt Olympic Oath elects to come here for an easier assignment than the Classic. He and promising stayer Fields Of Yulong will be charging at the consistent Vellaspride late.
Verdict: Olympic Oath @ $3.70
Race 2 – No Fuss Event Hire BM70 Handicap
Ridgewood Drive is consistently inconsistent but gets a big jockey switch and his Flemington form has been franked. He and Maclairey have the best chance of catching Linguist who should hit her straps third up.
Verdict: Ridgewood Drive @ $4.05
Race 3 – GA Liquor BM70 Handicap
The 4kg claim leaves Mr Tipla nicely placed in this crowd and he flies fresh. He’ll need to run past Chicago Cub who can settle handier here, as can Bold Missile from the inside gate, while Toolbar can give cheek on the speed.
Verdict: Mr Tipla @ $3.45
Race 4 – A List Racing Dual Choice Plate
Ruban Bleu will spot them all a start but only has six rivals to pass. With the right jockey on the minimum weight he will have every chance to run down pace-making trio Big Reel, Blue Tycoon and Princeton Spirit upon straightening.
Verdict: Ruban Bleu @ $2.40
Race 5 – LR The Breeze Retirement Community Stakes
This is a weak Listed race that Into The Abyss looks perfectly placed in. Finally broke through last start and from trailing position can double up here. Island Daze should lead and can keep kicking.
Verdict: Into The Abyss @ $1.94
Race 6 – Geelong Australia MCC Country Series Heat 6 VRC Trophy
Hard to tip around the unbeaten geldings Harbour Views and Impi. The former is the early favourite off a first up city win but the latter can lead and give them the slip. O’tauto will be running on.
Verdict: Impi @ $2.65
Race 7 – G3 bet365 Geelong Cup
An intriguing edition of the Cup. Supernova was well backed but couldn’t go with Surprise Baby in the Bart Cummings, gets in well at the weights here. Dal Harraild hit the line well there second up. Internationals Prince Of Arran, True Self and Red Galileo are all here on a November mission.
Verdict: Supernova @ $7.10
Race 8 – LR Roderick Insurance Brokers Geelong Classic
Southern Moon is a stayer of promise, as highlighted by his last two efforts. The sticky gate leaves him with plenty to do and hands Relucent the upper hand. His form lines are strong but the trip is a query. Respecting the Kiwi Long Jack with blinkers on.
Verdict: Relucent @ $5.10
Race 9 – Production Resource Group BM64 Handicap
A bit of speed on in the last. Sophia’s Choice can slot in behind the action and wait for her chance to strike in the straight. So too can Almighty Gold after a solid first up performance. Living The Dream may have to work but the maiden win earned her respect.
Verdict: Sophia’s Choice @ $3.70
