Racepal Caulfield Preview – 21st September 2019

Meeting: Caulfield
Date: 21st September
Rail: +3m
Weather: Scattered showers
Track Condition: Good 4
Track Expectations: Bit of rain potentially around on Saturday that we need to monitor. The track generally becomes easier to make ground on when the sting comes out a touch. Expecting it to be pretty typical Caulfield though and those in the first six advantaged.

Ones to watch:

  • Amphitrite – She returned in fantastic fashion running on strong in an unsuitably run race over 1200m which is short of her best distance. Trials and work leading in to that run were great as well. This Rupert Clarke shapes perfectly for her given the speed in the race and the fact we know she can run a really strong 1400m. Maps to sit midfield with a quality jockey on top. Very well placed from the Hayes team.
  • Bella Martini – Really hope this mare is kept to the 1200 and 1400m distance ranges this prep. To say she has been luckless over her last few preps is an understatement. She has copped some wide draws and shocking race shapes. Draws nicely this time around and she has proven to be a runner who can well fresh. Pippie is flying but outside of her, this race is much easier than the majority of races Bella has competed in. Double figures looks a decent each-way gamble.
  • I Am Immortal – Interested to see how this bloke goes. He is a pure speed machine making the step up from juvenile racing who we thought could potentially win a Group 1 Moir Stakes over 1000m this prep down in the weight. The fact he is resuming here in a softer race and likely missing the Moir next week means that there is a chance the camp don’t think he is going great. The jump-outs certainly suggested he wasn’t exactly flying. There were some excuses in those but Saturday for us looms as a bit of a mystery. We will want to take in all factors on this guy including betting signals and info from the mounting yard.

Race 1

Small field at the odd distance range often a tactical affair. Aristocratic Miss and Firstclass Dreamer look to be suited by the map and can settle in the first four in run.

Race 2

Skiddaw ran super at Moonee Valley, perhaps should have won. Looks ready to run a good number here. Long Jack should work across from barrier 10 and as long as he bounces out ok should find a decent spot in run. Will be hard to beat if the first 400m pans out well.

Race 3

What to make of I Am Immortal. Work leading up has been only fair on what is public knowledge. This looks to be a super winnable race if he is back to his best. Really fast horse with a good jockey on top. So much speed here, the three wide line with cover stalking the speed likely to be the best spot in run.

Race 4

Haut Brion Her goes forward most likely but will need some luck to take control of the speed. Mystery Love did enough when resuming, can go on with it here. Extreme Bliss the potential blowout roughie if they are running on.

Race 5

Pippie is flying and continues to be well placed. The big teams crushed her last start and she will be hard in the market here again. Bella Martini looks well placed to run well fresh. Tofane probably needs to get off the rail in the run but can figure.

Race 6

Caulfield Cup feeder race that sees Sikandarabad well placed. Steel Prince and Super Titus both have cup aspirations. The latter looks a blowout Caulfield Cup bolter. Lack of speed here. Wolf and Valac two runners that may be advantaged by that.

Race 7

Cracking race! Speed from Age Of Chivalry, Cliff’s Edge and Begood Toya Mother should really suit the likes of Amphitrite, So Si Bon, Widgee Turf. The winner will likely need luck in run or control of the front. Looking at runners who will run out a strong 1400m.

Race 8

Wide open field on our ratings this one. Westport is a roughie to keep an eye on who looked like he got lost around the Valley last start. Fascino maps really well at big odds here also. Go wide in the quaddie!

Race 9 Melting pot of a race. Lyre is suited but the low draw is a negative late in the day i think. Plague Stone can get the back of one of the leaders and storm down the middle of the track, comes down to price but is clear top pick here.
