Racepal Moonee Valley Preview – 7th September 2019

Meeting: Moonee Valley
Date: 7th September
Rail: True
Weather: Overcast/Showers
Track Condition: Good 4
Track Expectations: Rain around Melbourne on Thursday, Friday and clearing Saturday makes this a bit of a tricky one to get our heads around. The more rain that falls, the more likely they will get off the rail, you would think. Would certainly be cautious committing too much cash to the early markets if rain continues as there may be a few scratchings.

Key runners and ones to watch:

  • Neufbosc Hayes import being aimed at the Cups who did enough first-up I thought. Step up in distance will be short of his best but some help. Given his barrier I do not think he is a winning chance but he is certainly a live Caulfield and Melbourne Cup horse on our ratings and a horse to watch closely over the last 600m
  • Booker She is a bit of an enigma this mare, but her best is Group 2 WFA type level over the sprint distances. Her Oakleigh Plate win fresh earlier in the year was super. She then failed down the straight behind Sunlight and failed again on the freshen in an easier race in Adelaide. She has a bit of a career habit of mixing her form but she has jumped out well leading into this and I get the feeling she is a proper fresh horse.
  • Exhilarates Yet another jet juvenile in the blue colours. Her win fresh was good enough (new career peak) but importantly showed signs that there is plenty more to come. Given she had a long first prep, that was a really encouraging sign fresh. Maps midfield and if the gaps come will be very hard to hold out.

Race 1

Can Linda find the front on The Holy One? Busy map here! Skiddaw and All Too Terrific are the two that map to sit off the speed and get the right run into the race.

Race 2

If you close your eyes and say the names of these horses out loud you could swear it was a Wednesday at Sandown… Five Kingdom rates well but maps awfully. Laure Me In maps well but rates awfully… Junipal ticks enough boxes but you couldn’t possibly take the current price. Century Arrow not the worst roughie at $31.

Race 3

Ventura Storm is building his fitness but does love Moonee Valley. Love where Kentucky Breeze maps. King Of Leongrance is the one though. Positive jockey change, step up in distance after a sound return and some real quality about him. $3+ will prove a spoil if he delivers on his potential.

Race 4

Haut Brion Her is very consistent and there are no world beaters here. M Poy claims a few kilos but she is still bouncing up in weight. Tofane and Fabric are two that interest here while there are four runners fresh to keep an eye on in the yard including Mystery Love.

Race 5

We touched on Exhilarates in our Ones To Watch. She is going well. Pin Sec comes out of the same race and did enough fresh without setting the world on fire. Saone not a bad roughie coming back in distance off a maiden win at 40-1!

Race 6

Widgee Turf trialled like a rocket at Cranbourne. Horse is obviously flying and a horse to follow this prep. Spirit Of Valour at double figures here the one I like most if anyone is to topple Deprive who was superb first up and looks on the way up.

Race 7

Great sprint this with more than half the field coming in fresh. Faatinah is a good fresh horse, a 1000m specialist who maps well and has run well at Moonee Valley also. Booker is a talented enigma. Bons Away a bit of a tease but is in career best form now while Eduardo has a bit to prove and faces a busy speed map that doesn’t suit him.

Race 8

Good race. We have runners on all sorts of Spring paths coming out of this one. Trap For Fools will improve off the fresh run, drawn poorly though big odds. Fifty Stars sets up really well as does Sikandarabad. Best Of Days looks short enough at $5 in the early play.

Race 9

The very talented Lucky For All resumes off a long break. If the penny has dropped, look out. Vinland, New Universe and Love Shack Baby tick enough boxes. Dr Drill has been up for a while now, but does get a positive jockey change.
